Public Member Vacancy

Public Member Appointment

The New Zealand Press Council invites applications from suitable candidates for appointment as a member of the Council representing the public. The appointee will be required to start in January 2017. A public member should have no connection to main-stream media.

The Press Council provides the public with an independent forum for resolving complaints about the editorial content of newspapers, magazines, their websites and some digital news sites and blogs.

The Council comprises an independent Chairman, five members with no association with the press who represent the public, two nominees of the Newspaper Publishers’ Association, one appointed by the journalists’ union E Tu, one representing digital media and a representative from the Magazine Publishers’ Association.

The Council is based in Wellington and the appointee will need to be available to attend meetings of the Council every six weeks. Public members are paid a meeting fee and travel expenses.

Selection of the public members is made by a panel which includes the Chief Ombudsman.

Applications, which should include a brief CV, close with the undersigned on 7 November 2016.
